# Artificial Intelligence is a Distraction
|
|
|
|
Everywhere you turn these days people, but mostly businesses are obsessing over Artificial Intelligence or AI. While there's no real accepted definition it's the buzzword driving everyone forward. It's the cool new thing that everyone wants. Or do we? I guess it depends on how you define it.
|
|
|
|
So I'll give my definitions so we're on the same page here: the current technology that people have and are talking about is what's called a large language model (LLM). These are a sort of word calculator that predicts the next logical word given some input words or a prompt.
|
|
|
|
The goal, which while I imagine is still theoretically possible is not LLM's. Instead it's what are called AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) and ASI (Artificial Super Intelligence). An easy way to understand these are basically computer systems that can think at least as well as humans on all similar tasks to humans (AGI) or a super-charged version of a human brain (ASI). The value of such a machine is immeasurable and could be positively transformative to our world. Hence, there's an arms race of sorts for companies and governments to try to develop such technology. Much like similar arms races of the past with space exploration and atomic bombs there's lots of power if the possible is realized and becomes a tool you can wield.

|
So while leaders of societies are falling over themselves to throw money at this possibility, they are distracting us from their real motives. When they promise magical things from AI, they are distracting us from the real problems with imaginary solutions that may not solve anything.

|
AI is a distraction.
|
|
|
|
## The Moonshot AGI/ASI are Possible Not Probable
|
|
|
|
Skeptical as I am about truly sentient AI being created, I'll admit it is possible in theory. And those theories I think are motivating many people's dreams, fears, anxieties, and fantasies about what could be coming in the near future. But not so fast, I think even if it is possible, it's highly improbable. There's several barriers and boundaries that will prevent this technology from being realized.

- AI Costs too much to develop and deploy
|
|
- LLM's may already be hitting the upper limit of their S curve
|
|
- A machine that can think for itself is no longer a tool, it is an entity that will preserve itself
|
|
- The socio-political unrest may not allow the arms race to continue
|
|
|
|
